August Diversity Calendar

August DEI Calendar honors senior employees, embraces the drive of young employees, and welcomes indigenous culture and customs.
SDGs to track this month

This August, honor senior employees and embrace the progressive, innovative, and creative drive of young employees, embrace indigenous culture and customs, and leave no one behind in your pursuit of the SDGs.

What is the month of August dedicated to?

International Day of the World's Indigenous People

According to the UN, 47% of all indigenous peoples employed internationally lack a high school diploma or equivalent. The disparity is considerably wider for women. Urge your workplace to respect indigenous identities and understand their history, culture, languages, and traditions.

International Youth Day

Young people often face age-related barriers to employment, opportunities, and justice. Support younger employees by encouraging forums and affinity groups that give them a platform to exchange information, knowledge, and resources. You can also roll out mentorship or L&D programs that enable growth or have seniors volunteer their time to impart career skills to underserved youth.

Here are more upcoming DE&I campaigns in August:

  • World Senior Citizens Day
  • World Humanitarian Day
  • Women’s Equality Day
August Trivia💡
August is National Civility Month and a reminder to be kind, empathetic, and respectful and treat the world like we treat ourselves and our loved ones. It encourages us to be caring and civil in our pursuits and habits and be more mindful of our surroundings.

Diversity Activities for August

Here are some fun and impactful activities DE&I teams can organise to celebrate this diversity month:

  • Organize a Diversity Briefing in which employees from various backgrounds can explain why certain holy days or holidays are important to them. They may be granted time off accordingly. It also boosts historical and cultural sensitivity among employees.
  • Introduce a 'Quote of the Day' that employees can contribute to on rotation. This could be a slack or email thread.
  • Invite Guest Speakers and Experts to brief your employees on different DE&I themes, mental well-being tips, and lectures on cultural or topical themes. For example, you could host Indigenous people to share their narratives on the International Day of the World's Indigenous People.
