How Atlassian Built a Global Volunteering Program That Reached 32,000+ Lives

Atlassian is the software company behind Jira, Confluence, and Trello, tools that teams around the world use to plan and ship work together. Founded in Australia in 2002, they have grown into a genuinely distributed company, with employees working across more than a dozen countries and time zones, many without a central office to call home.

Ein globales Programm zur Einbindung von über 5.000 Mitarbeitern

PayPal feierte am 27. Juni seinen ersten Global Impact Day

What Atlassian didn't have was a way to make that belief feel consistent for a workforce spread across so many countries. The intention was there. What was missing was the infrastructure to match it, so that an employee's ability to give back didn't depend on which office, or time zone, they happened to sit in.

DIE HERAUSFORDERUNG

Koordination mit hyperlokalen KMUs und gemeinnützigen Organisationen in 8 Ländern

Atlassian's workforce spans 12+ countries and is largely distributed by design, which meant a global volunteering program had to solve three things at once:
‍

  • Giving any employee, anywhere, easy access to volunteering opportunities
  • Keeping the quality and meaning of that experience consistent across regions
  • Growing the program through technology and process, not by adding headcount.
    ‍

Before Goodera, volunteering at Atlassian happened in pockets, region by region, campaign by campaign. There was no shared calendar and no unified view of who was participating or what impact they were having together. Teams were doing good work. Nobody could see the full picture, least of all the employees doing it.

DIE LÖSUNG

Gooderas Lösungssuite für den PayPal Impact Day

In July 2024, Atlassian brought on Goodera as a Goodera 365 partner to turn ad hoc volunteering into one connected, global program that could match the scale of its workforce without adding operational weight to its team.

Together, we built a seven-pillar model:
01.
Koordination und Beschaffung von Hilfsmitteln für Freiwilligenarbeit
Defined program vision through workshops and implemented structured governance with bi-annual planning, QBRs, and annual reviews.
02.
Kartierung und Schulung von Gastgebern an 14 Standorten
Expanded Atlassian's nonprofit network to 200+ partners across 12 countries, with 40+ new nonprofits onboarded.
03.
Förderung der maximalen Beteiligung durch mitarbeiterorientiertes Marketingmaterial
GoodStack × Goodera integration for two-way data sync, automated event pages, and unified visibility.
04.
Einbindung von Freiwilligen durch lokal relevante Eisbrecher
Built a global champion model with toolkits, a dedicated PMO, regional leads, and ongoing operational support.
05.
Verwaltung der kompletten Logistik, um sicherzustellen, dass die lokalen Gemeinden die Lieferungen in einwandfreiem Zustand erhalten
Designed and executed flagship campaigns: Week of Good and May It Forward, with strong local ownership.
06.
Messung der greifbaren Wirkung, um die Geschichte von PayPal zu erzählen
Multi-channel storytelling, leadership amplification, and ready-to-use toolkits for regional Champions.
07.
Impact Reporting
Built real-time dashboards to track participation, measure outcomes, and inform data-driven decisions.
