How Atlassian Built a Global Volunteering Program That Reached 32,000+ Lives
Atlassian is the software company behind Jira, Confluence, and Trello, tools that teams around the world use to plan and ship work together. Founded in Australia in 2002, they have grown into a genuinely distributed company, with employees working across more than a dozen countries and time zones, many without a central office to call home.
A Culture Built Around Giving Back
Long before this partnership began, giving back was already part of how Atlassian operates. The company co-founded Pledge 1%, a global movement that asks businesses to commit equity, product, profit, and employee time to causes they care about. "Be the change you seek" is one of Atlassian's core values, and it shows up in policy: every employee gets paid days off each year set aside for volunteering.
What Atlassian didn't have was a way to make that belief feel consistent for a workforce spread across so many countries. The intention was there. What was missing was the infrastructure to match it, so that an employee's ability to give back didn't depend on which office, or time zone, they happened to sit in.

THE CHALLENGE
Scaling Volunteering Across a Distributed Workforce Without Operational Burden
Atlassian's workforce spans 12+ countries and is largely distributed by design, which meant a global volunteering program had to solve three things at once:
- Giving any employee, anywhere, easy access to volunteering opportunities
- Keeping the quality and meaning of that experience consistent across regions
- Growing the program through technology and process, not by adding headcount.
Before Goodera, volunteering at Atlassian happened in pockets, region by region, campaign by campaign. There was no shared calendar and no unified view of who was participating or what impact they were having together. Teams were doing good work. Nobody could see the full picture, least of all the employees doing it.
THE SOLUTION
Goodera's Solution Suite for Atlassian's Global Program
In July 2024, Atlassian brought on Goodera as a Goodera 365 partner to turn ad hoc volunteering into one connected, global program that could match the scale of its workforce without adding operational weight to its team.
