Global Youth Service Day 2027: How Companies Can Put Young People in the Lead

Global Youth Service Day 2027: How Companies Can Put Young People in the Lead

Every other day of service asks adults to show up for young people. This one asks adults to step back and let young people run the project. That reversal is the whole point, and it is the part most companies get wrong.

Global Youth Service Day is an annual event that mobilizes young people aged 5 to 25 to lead service projects in their communities. Youth Service America (YSA) started it in 1988 as National Youth Service Day in the United States and expanded it worldwide in 2000. It runs over a weekend each April; the 2026 dates were April 24 to 26, and YSA announces each year’s dates on its site. For a company, the day is a reason to build a youth service program that lasts past the weekend: mentoring, STEM workshops, learning kits, and projects where young people hold the plan and employees hold the ladder.

Here is why the reversal matters. The International Labor Organization (ILO) reported that 20.4% of young people worldwide were not in employment, education, or training in 2023, with the rate for young women more than double that for young men. That is a global average, and it hides large differences by country; for a company, it's a reminder that many young people are missing the first job, the first mentor, and the first project led.

When Is Global Youth Service Day?

It takes place over a weekend in April, with Youth Service America setting the exact dates each year. In 2026 it ran Friday, April 24 to Sunday, April 26. YSA had not published the 2027 dates at the time of writing; third-party calendars list April 23 to 25, 2027, but take the date from ysa.org rather than from a calendar site.

YSA wraps the weekend in a Youth Service Month, which in 2026 ran April 10 to May 10 and gathered 26 national and global youth-related events around the core dates. For a company, that means a project does not have to land on the weekend itself; a weekday activity in the two weeks either side counts.

April is also the month of Earth Day on April 22, so a youth-led environmental project can serve both dates with one plan. Goodera’s campaign calendar maps the dates alongside the rest of the year.

What Is Global Youth Service Day?

Global Youth Service Day is the largest annual service event dedicated to children and youth, with projects in more than 100 countries. Its purpose is twofold: to get young people serving their communities and to make their contributions visible to adults who often do not see young people as a resource. Projects range from park cleanups and food drives to literacy tutoring, health campaigns, and civic actions, all planned and led by young people.

  1. Who Started It, and Why?

Youth Service America, a nonprofit founded in 1986 to expand youth service in the United States, launched National Youth Service Day in 1988 with a coalition of partners. In 2000, it became Global Youth Service Day, and today YSA coordinates it with an international network of organizations, funders, and corporate sponsors who provide grants and supplies for youth-led projects.

The founding idea was simple. Young people were already volunteering, but nobody was counting it or celebrating it, and policymakers treated youth as a problem to solve rather than a group that solves problems. A single day with a shared name made the work countable and gave young people a stage.

  1. How Is It Different From Other Days of Service?

Most days of service, from MLK Day to a company Day of Service, ask adults to serve, sometimes on behalf of young people. Global Youth Service Day asks young people to lead and adults to support. A youth group, a school class, or a youth nonprofit designs the project; the company funds it, staffs it, mentors it, or amplifies it.

That changes what a company brings. Instead of forty employees with shovels, the most useful contribution is often five employees as mentors, a grant for materials, a venue, or a professional skill the young organizers lack.

  1. What Is the Focus for 2027?

YSA does not publish a single annual theme the way UN observances do. It organizes the day around youth-led projects and, in recent years, around a Youth Service Month that strings together related dates from Earth Day to National Teacher Appreciation Week. Check ysa.org for 2027 campaign materials, which usually appear in the first quarter.

No theme is useful for companies. It means the project can follow what young people in your community care about, which is the design principle this whole guide rests on.

Why Does Youth Service Matter to Communities and Companies?

Youth service matters because it is where young people first learn they can change something, and because communities with the fewest opportunities for young people are usually the ones that need them most. A young person who leads a project at 16 is more likely to vote, volunteer, and lead at 26; a community that trusts its young people gets a generation of organizers, not a generation that leaves.

For companies, the connection is direct. Today’s youth-led project is a pipeline: young organizers become future employees, and the employees who mentor them build the skills in our guide to how employee volunteerism improves occupational wellness. Companies that run STEM and career programs also tend to find that the students who met an engineer at 15 are the ones who apply at 22, a point our International Day of Women and Girls in Science guide makes for girls specifically.

Goodera’s youth nonprofit organizations guide covers groups working with specific youth populations, from at-risk and homeless youth to young people from underrepresented backgrounds, where a company’s support goes furthest.

Did You Know These Facts About Global Youth Service Day?

A few facts for the announcement.

  1. It started as a photo project. In 1988, Youth Service America sent photographers across the United States to document “A Day in the Life of Youth Service.” The first National Youth Service Day followed the next year.

  2. It went global in 2000 and is now observed in more than 100 countries, which makes it the largest service event in the world dedicated to young people.

  3. The age range is 5 to 25. YSA’s definition of youth stretches from kindergarten to early career, so a company’s interns and first-year hires count as participants, not just volunteers.

  4. The weekend sits inside a month. YSA’s Youth Service Month, April 10 to May 10 in 2026,
gathered 26 related events, so a company can tie its activity to Earth Day, teacher appreciation, or a school week rather than to one Saturday.

  5. Education is the cause employees are choosing. In Goodera’s VQ Report 2026, child welfare and education grew from 32% to 43% of all events in one year, the largest shift of any cause. That is a trend across the companies in the report, not a forecast for yours.

How Can a Company Build a Program for Youth Service?

A youth service program puts young people in the lead and the company in a supporting role: mentoring, funding, hosting, and skills. The seven ideas below run from the lightest lift to the most involved, and most can work in the office, at a school, or virtually. Pick one or two for April and plan the rest across the year.

  1.  Mentor Young People Into Their First Job

The most valuable thing most employees can give a young person is twenty minutes of honest career conversation. Partner with a youth nonprofit or school to run resume clinics, mock interviews, and career Q&As, in person or over video, with students aged 16 to 24. Goodera’s “make youth career-ready” activities pair employees with young job seekers for exactly this.

Keep it structured: a short brief for mentors, a question list for students, and a follow-up a month later. Our guide to skills-based volunteering covers how to scope it so both sides get something.

  1.  Run a STEM or Career Workshop at a School

Employees in technical roles bring a school something it cannot buy: a working engineer, analyst, or designer in the room. Run a robotics session, a coding hour, a data game, or a career panel at a partner school during Youth Service Month. Our guide to STEM volunteer opportunities lists formats that work for employee teams, and our International Day of Women and Girls in Science guide covers how to make the session land for girls.

  1. Pack Back-to-School and Learning Kits at a Kiosk

Set up an office station where employees assemble STEM kits, literacy kits, or school supply bags for a youth program, in 15 to 30 minutes with no sign-up. Goodera’s Back-to-School programs include STEAM learning kits, financial literacy and career readiness workshops, and supply drives that run in April as well as August. Our back-to-school event ideas guide covers the formats.

  1. Co-Lead a Service Project With a Youth Group

This idea best captures the spirit of the day. Find a youth group, a school club, or a youth nonprofit with a project already planned, and offer employees as co-leads: adults who handle logistics, safety, and transport while the young people run the project. Our list of education nonprofits includes organizations that run youth-led programs and welcome corporate co-leads. Goodera’s in-person volunteering opportunities include site-based youth projects by city.

  1. Fund and Staff a Youth-Led Project

YSA and its partners award small grants to youth-led projects each year. A company can do the same locally: a modest grant, materials, a venue, and a few employee volunteers for a project a youth group designs. Pair it with a volunteer grant program so employees who staff the project also trigger a company donation.

  1. Bring Interns and Early-Career Employees In as Leaders

Your interns and first-year hires are inside YSA’s 5-to-25 range. Give them the lead on the company’s Global Youth Service Day project: the planning, the partner relationship, the day-of coordination. It is a low-stakes leadership assignment with real responsibility, and it turns the day into something the company’s own young people own rather than attend.

  1. Hand the Day to Your Young Professionals ERG

If your company has an early-career or young professionals employee resource group, April is theirs. They know which causes their members care about, and they are the natural bridge to youth nonprofits. Our ERG engagement resources include volunteering formats built for groups like these.

How Do You Keep Youth Service Going After April?

Youth service works as a calendar, not a weekend, and four dates give a company a rhythm. Each one has a Goodera activity set behind it.

  1. April, Global Youth Service Day: the co-led project or the mentoring clinic, with interns in the lead.

  2. August, Back to School: supply drives, learning kits, and career readiness workshops through Goodera’s Back-to-School programs, timed to the new school year.
Goodera's catalog of Back-to-school Programs
  1. August 12, International Youth Day: a UN observance that suits a career panel or a youth nonprofit partnership announcement; our youth nonprofit organizations guide is built around it.

  2. September 8, International Literacy Day: tutoring, audiobook recording, and literacy kits, which Goodera runs as a campaign alongside Back to School.

Put all four on the calendar in March with one or two youth partners across them, so the students your employees mentored in April are the ones they see in September. Goodera’s campaign calendar maps these dates with the rest of the year.

Key Takeaways From This Guide

Step back and let young people run it. Five points to take into planning.

  1. Global Youth Service Day is a weekend in April, run by Youth Service America since 1988 and global since 2000. Take the 2027 dates from ysa.org, and use the surrounding Youth Service Month if the weekend does not fit.

  2. Young people lead; the company supports. Mentoring, funding, hosting, and skills do more than forty adults with shovels.

  3. Build a program, not an event. Mentoring clinics, STEM workshops, kit kiosks, co-led projects, and youth-led grants each work on their own and chain together across the year.

  4. Your own young people count. Interns and first-year hires are in the 5-to-25 range. Put them in charge

  5. Follow the calendar. April for Global Youth Service Day, August for Back to School and International Youth Day, September for Literacy Day, with the same partners across all four.

Goodera plans and runs youth and education volunteering, from career-readiness mentoring and STEM workshops to back-to-school kits and co-led youth projects, for companies across 100+ countries with 50K+ nonprofit partners. Explore our Back-to-School programs or the full campaign calendar.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. When Is Global Youth Service Day, and When Is the Next One?

Global Youth Service Day is held over a weekend each April, with Youth Service America (YSA) setting the exact dates. In 2026 it ran from Friday, April 24 to Sunday, April 26. YSA had not announced the 2027 dates at the time of writing; third-party calendars list April 23 to 25, 2027, but confirm on ysa.org before planning. YSA also runs a Youth Service Month around the weekend, April 10 to May 10 in 2026, so a company activity on a weekday in that window counts.

2. What Is Global Youth Service Day?

Global Youth Service Day is the largest annual service event dedicated to children and young people aged 5 to 25, observed in more than 100 countries. Young people plan and lead community service projects, from park cleanups and food drives to literacy tutoring and civic actions, while adults, schools, nonprofits, and companies support them with mentoring, funding, venues, and skills. Its purpose is both to get young people serving and to make their contributions visible.

3. Who Organizes Global Youth Service Day?

Youth Service America (YSA), a nonprofit founded in 1986 to expand youth service, organizes Global Youth Service Day. YSA launched it as National Youth Service Day in the United States in 1988 and expanded it worldwide in 2000. YSA coordinates the day with an international network of partner organizations, funders, and corporate sponsors that provide grants and supplies for youth-led projects, and it publishes campaign materials and the annual dates on ysa.org.

4. What Is a Program for Youth Service, and How Does a Company Start One?

A program for youth service is an ongoing set of activities in which a company supports young people to lead and take part in community work: career mentoring, science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) workshops at schools, learning kit assembly, co-led projects with youth groups, and small grants for youth-designed projects. A company starts one by choosing a youth or education nonprofit partner, running a single activity in April, and putting the next two or three dates on the calendar. Skills-based volunteering and employee resource groups (ERGs) are the two internal levers that make it sustainable.

5. Is Global Youth Service Day Only for Young People?

No. Young people lead the projects, but adults, schools, nonprofits, and companies are expected to support them. For a company, that means employees serve as mentors, co-leads, funders, and hosts rather than as the primary volunteers. Employees under 25, such as interns and first-year hires, fall under Youth Service America’s definition of youth and can lead the company’s project directly.

6. What Are Good Global Youth Service Day Activities for a Team?

Seven activities that fit the day: career mentoring clinics with resume reviews and mock interviews for young job seekers, a science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) or career workshop at a partner school, packing back-to-school or learning kits at an office kiosk, co-leading a service project a youth group has planned, funding and staffing a youth-led project, putting interns and early-career employees in charge of the company’s project, and handing the day to a young professionals employee resource group (ERG). Most can run in person, virtually, or as a hybrid.

7. How Can Remote Employees Take Part in Global Youth Service Day?

Remote employees can mentor young people over video through resume clinics, mock interviews, and career conversations, which are among the day's most valuable contributions. They can assemble learning kits from materials shipped to them as part of a hybrid campaign, build STEM or literacy resources for a partner nonprofit to print and distribute, and take on skills-based projects for youth organizations. A live-hosted virtual career panel, recorded for students in other time zones, works well for distributed teams.

8. How Does Global Youth Service Day Connect to Back-to-School and Education Campaigns?

Global Youth Service Day in April opens a youth calendar that runs through Back to School in August, International Youth Day on August 12, and International Literacy Day on September 8. Companies often use April for mentoring and co-led projects, August for supply drives, learning kits, and career readiness workshops, and September for tutoring and literacy kits, with the same youth or education partner across all of them. Goodera’s Back-to-School programs and STEM volunteering activities run in April and August.

9. Which UN Sustainable Development Goals Connect to Youth Service?

Youth service connects most directly to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), through education, mentoring, and career readiness. Depending on the project, it also maps to SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities) where it reaches underserved young people, SDG 5 (Gender Equality) where it focuses on girls, and SDG 13 or 15 for youth-led environmental projects. Companies reporting against the SDGs can map one youth program to several goals.

10. How Does Goodera Support Global Youth Service Day Volunteering?

Goodera plans and runs youth and education volunteering end to end: career-readiness mentoring that pairs employees with young job seekers, science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) workshops at schools, back-to-school and learning kit assembly at office kiosks or at home, and co-led projects with youth nonprofits, with vetted partners in 100+ countries. Participation data from every activity flows into Benevity automatically. Goodera’s Back-to-School programs, Literacy Day campaign, and youth nonprofit guides cover the period following Global Youth Service Day through the year.
