Think about the last time someone showed up for you when you were overwhelmed. A hospital discharge with nowhere to go. A family crisis that needed a steady voice. A kid who stopped talking at school. Chances are a social worker was in that room, or built the system that got help to you.

You probably did not get their name. That is how the profession tends to work: close to the hardest moments in people’s lives, and rarely in the frame when things turn out well.

National Social Work Month is observed every March, from March 1 to March 31, to make that work visible. The National Association of Social Workers (NASW) started it in 1963 and sets a theme each year. The 2026 theme was “Social Workers: Uplift. Defend. Transform.” World Social Work Day falls on the third Tuesday of March, which is March 16, 2027.

Here is the scale of the profession you are thanking. According to NASW, citing the Bureau of Labor Statistics, more than 810,900 social workers are employed in the United States, and the profession is projected to grow 6% to 9% over the next decade. NASW also describes them as the largest group of licensed mental health providers in the country.

They work in schools, hospitals, veteran services, child welfare, mental health clinics, prisons, courts, and corporate employee assistance programs. Some of them work in your company right now, in HR, wellness, or community relations, and you may not know it.

For a company, March is a rare chance to do two things at once: thank a profession most people never think about, and point your team’s time and skills at the causes those professionals carry every day.

This guide covers when the month falls, what the theme means, the key dates inside it, quotes worth sharing, and seven ways your team can celebrate at work.

When Is National Social Work Month?

Every March, for the whole month. In 2027, it runs from Monday, March 1 to Wednesday, March 31.

NASW created Social Work Week in 1963 to build public support for the profession. Over the following two decades, it grew into a full month, and in 1984 a presidential proclamation gave March its formal federal standing. NASW has published a theme and toolkit every year since.

One practical note. March is a busy month on the social impact calendar, with International Women’s Day on March 8 and Women’s History Month running alongside. Plan them together and the month reads as one program rather than three competing announcements.

What Is Social Work Appreciation Month, and Is It Different?

No, it is the same thing. Social Work Appreciation Month is one of several names for National Social Work Month, and all of them mean March 1 to 31. There is no separate observance and no second set of dates to track.

The official title is National Professional Social Work Month, which is what the 1984 presidential proclamation and NASW’s materials use. Most people shorten it to National Social Work Month or Social Workers Month. “Appreciation Month” came later, from hospitals, school districts, and employers who wanted the name itself to say thank you.

The difference is emphasis. “Social Work Month” points at awareness: helping the public understand what the profession does. “Appreciation Month” points at gratitude: recognizing the specific social workers in a building or a community. The same month holds both, and the best workplace campaigns do both.

So which name should you use? A rough guide:

  • In formal communications, such as a proclamation, a press release, or an all-hands slide, use “National Social Work Month.” It matches NASW and the federal record.

  • In internal messaging, such as a Slack post, a thank-you email, or a recognition board, “Social Work Appreciation Month” works well because it tells employees what to do.

  • On social media, follow NASW’s lead and use “Social Work Month” with the official hashtags, so your posts land in the same feed as everyone else’s.

One name to avoid: “National Social Workers Day.” There is no such fixed date in the United States. If someone on your team is looking for a single day to anchor an event, point them to World Social Work Day on March 16, 2027, covered in the section above.

What Is the National Social Work Month Theme?

The 2026 theme, chosen by NASW, was “Social Workers: Uplift. Defend. Transform.” NASW tied it to the profession’s core mission: enhancing human well-being, meeting basic needs, and paying special attention to people who are vulnerable, oppressed, or living in poverty.

Each word describes something social workers do every day, so each one is worth unpacking.

1. What Does “Uplift” Mean in Practice?

Uplift means connecting people to resources, building on their strengths, and helping them reach possibilities they could not access alone. A school social worker finding mental health support for a student. A hospital social worker lining up housing for a patient’s family after discharge. A community organizer helping neighbors push for affordable housing.

2. What Does “Defend” Mean in Practice?

Defend means advocating for the rights of people who are least equipped to advocate for themselves. Social workers testify before legislatures, challenge policies that harm vulnerable communities, stand between a child and an unsafe home, and work bureaucratic systems on behalf of people those systems have failed. It takes courage, and it is the part of the job the public sees least.

3. What Does “Transform” Mean in Practice?

Transform means changing the systems themselves. NASW’s own example is Dr. Indivar Dutta-Gupta, placed in foster care as an infant, who went on to become a policy expert working to improve the child welfare system he came through. Social workers respond to the world as it is, and then work to change it.

4. What About the 2027 Theme?

NASW had not announced the 2027 theme at the time of writing. It usually appears on socialworkers.org in late fall or early winter, along with the hashtags and toolkit for the year. Check there before you finalize campaign materials, and treat the 2026 theme as a reference until then.

How Did National Social Work Month Begin?

Social work as a profession grew out of the Settlement House Movement in the late 19th century, when reformers moved into poor neighborhoods to work alongside residents instead of at a distance. Jane Addams, who co-founded Hull House in Chicago in 1889, won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1931 partly for that work.

NASW formed in 1955 by merging seven social work organizations into one professional body. Eight years later, it created Social Work Week to build public awareness of the profession.

Through the 1970s and early 1980s, state after state recognized March as Social Work Month, and the observance stretched from a week to the full month. The 1984 presidential proclamation made it official at the federal level.

Today NASW publishes an annual theme, a media toolkit, and a calendar of events each March, and hundreds of thousands of social workers and supporters take part.

Which Social Work Month Quotes Are Worth Sharing?

A good quote earns its place in a recognition email or a social post when it says something true about the work. These seven do, and each one is attributed to a real, checkable source. Where a line is widely shared but hard to trace to a primary text, we have marked it as attributed.

  • “Social workers help people function the best way they can in their environment, deal with their relationships, and solve personal and family problems.” National Association of Social Workers

  • “The good we secure for ourselves is precarious and uncertain until it is secured for all of us and incorporated into our common life.” Jane Addams, Twenty Years at Hull-House (1910)

  • “Action indeed is the sole medium of expression for ethics.” Jane Addams, Democracy and Social Ethics (1902)

  • “Social work is the art of doing different things for and with different people by cooperating with them to achieve at one and the same time their own and society’s betterment.” Attributed to Mary Richmond, a founder of professional social work

  • “I am not afraid of storms, for I am learning how to sail my ship.” Louisa May Alcott, Little Women (1868)

  • “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” Attributed to Margaret Mead

  • “We rise by lifting others.” Attributed to Robert Ingersoll

The first four come from inside the profession, which makes them a good fit for a formal setting such as an all-hands or a proclamation. The last three are broader and work well on a card or in a Slack post.

A quote on its own is easy to scroll past. What makes it land is one specific, personal line about the social worker you are thanking, placed right after it. Something like: “We rise by lifting others. Priya, the way you walked three families through the housing process last quarter is exactly what that looks like.”

The quote opens the door. The detail is what they keep.

You are thanking. The quote opens the door; the specific detail is what they remember.

What Are the Best Social Work Month Ideas for Workplaces?

Pick one or two of the seven ideas below rather than all of them. The strongest campaigns combine public recognition with something your team does with its own hands, and each idea here can stand alone or feed the next.

1. Host a Lunch-and-Learn With a Social Worker

Most people have a vague picture of social work and have never heard a social worker describe a normal week. Invite one from a local agency, a nearby social work school, or a nonprofit partner to speak for 30 minutes.

Ask them to walk through a Tuesday. The specifics change how colleagues think about the profession, and the session often surfaces employees who want to volunteer afterward.

2. Run a Skills-Based Volunteer Day Tied to Social Work Month

Social Work Month is a natural anchor for a volunteering campaign that points your team’s expertise at the issues social workers handle. Your marketing team can help a family services nonprofit with donor communications. Your legal team can support clients facing housing paperwork. Your technology team can clean up a child welfare organization’s database.

Smaller nonprofits need this kind of help most and can rarely hire for it. Our guide to skills-based volunteering benefits, examples, and best practices explains how to scope a project that lands.

3. Launch a “Thank a Social Worker” Campaign

In the first week of March, send a company-wide prompt asking every employee to reach out to a social worker they know, by message, email, or handwritten note, with one specific thing that person’s work meant to them.

Collect the responses and share a selection in your internal newsletter each week. Specific gratitude outperforms any formal award, and it often reaches social workers who have never once been told their work was noticed.

4. Recognize the Social Workers on Your Own Team

Social workers do not only work in nonprofits and government. They staff corporate employee assistance programs, HR teams, wellness functions, and community relations roles. Find the ones inside your organization this March.

A shout-out at an all-hands, a mention in the newsletter, or a dedicated post naming what they have contributed tells the whole company that this work is seen.

4. Recognize the Social Workers on Your Own Team

Choose one local organization working on an issue your company cares about, such as a shelter, a family services agency, a mental health nonprofit, or a food bank, and commit to a March partnership. Volunteer as a team, run a supply drive, or organize a donation match.

Choosing a specific partner and a specific contribution is what turns the month into a community investment. Goodera’s in-person and virtual volunteering opportunities include activities built with social services partners.

6. Give Your Employee Resource Groups the Lead

If your company has an ERG focused on mental health, caregivers, veterans, or community impact, hand them a week of the month. They know which causes resonate with members and which social workers in the company deserve a spotlight. Our ERG engagement resources include volunteering formats designed for groups like these.

7. Share Social Work Month Activities on Social Media

Use NASW’s official hashtags throughout March. In 2026, those were #SocialWorkMonth, #SWMonth2026, and #UpliftDefendTransform; check the 2027 toolkit for the updated set.

Post a quote, spotlight your nonprofit partner, or share a short video of an employee explaining why social work matters to them. NASW publishes free graphics and suggested captions each year, so you do not have to start from a blank page.

How Do You Spread Social Work Month Activities Across March?

If you want a month-long campaign instead of a single event, this week-by-week frame works. Each week builds on the last, and World Social Work Day sits in the middle as the anchor.

  1. Week 1, March 1 to 7: Awareness. Share the NASW theme with your team. Post a quote. Send an internal note explaining what social workers do and why the month exists. Open nominations for social workers employees want to recognize.
