Science, Art, and a Flock of Curiosity
With foldscopes and bird feeders, 99 volunteers brought science, art, and nature into the lives of children in Eastern Hungary.

The Essence
This initiative combined science, creativity, and care for the natural world, showing children that learning can be hands-on, joyful, and deeply connected to their surroundings.
In Eastern Hungary, volunteers introduced foldscopes to disadvantaged children, giving them the chance to discover the microscopic world while also integrating the tool into art workshops. Alongside this, bird feeders were shared and installed in local gardens, enriching science education and connecting students with the rhythms of nature.
Problem
Children in disadvantaged communities often lack access to engaging educational tools that make learning fun and interactive. Without such resources, it can be harder to spark curiosity, build confidence, and nurture long-term interest in science and the arts.
Solution
IBM and Genesys volunteers supported Igazgyöngy Alapítvány by providing foldscopes and bird feeders that expanded learning opportunities. Foldscopes opened new worlds of science discovery, while art workshops helped children use creativity to deepen retention. Bird feeders turned classrooms and homes into outdoor science labs, fostering care for nature and building social competencies.
