Parents at a leading global technology firm joined forces with their children to build solar lamps for unhoused youth — turning a simple hands-on activity into a powerful lesson in empathy, energy access, and the joy of giving!

The company wanted to include a volunteering activity in their Take Your Children to Work Day event. But how do you design a meaningful, safe, and engaging experience for kids aged 6 to 13?
- Hands-on and tangible
- Fun but not frivolous
- Emotionally grounding but not overwhelming
- Easy to follow and deeply meaningful

In partnership with At The Crossroads, a nonprofit supporting unhoused youth in the U.S., we brought kids and families together to assemble solar-powered lamps for youth living without access to electricity. The session included:
- A guided storytelling moment about how lack of electricity affects millions of children and teens in America.
- A short video from At The Crossroads introducing real-life stories of impact.
- A hands-on activity where kids built solar lamps using lightweight, child-safe kits.
- Time for creativity, with children writing or drawing postcards to include with the lamps.

By the end of the event ...
- 30 solar lamps were built by the children.
- Each lamp was packed with a personal note of encouragement, written out by the kids.
- The lamps were donated to At The Crossroads, where they were distributed to youth in transitional housing and shelters.
- The kids gained an understanding of energy access, empathy, and the joy of giving.
This Juniors volunteering experience was successful because it struck the perfect balance:
- Age-Appropriate Learning
Kids learned about homelessness and solar energy in a simple, engaging way. - Tangible Action
Children didn’t just hear about change—they made it with their hands. - Fun and Empowering
The activity was playful but purpose-driven, fostering pride and joy in giving back. - Family-Friendly
Parents and children connected over values and purpose in a safe, structured environment.
