Operation Smile China provides free surgery for children with cleft lips, cleft palates, and facial differences in some of the country's hardest-to-reach regions, from Meigu County in the Daliang Mountains to Yinchuan, Tibet, and Yunnan. It also trains local medical staff so the expertise stays, and brings young volunteers into the work.

Geography is the whole challenge. Operation Smile's programs reach remote mountain and valley regions across a dozen provinces, places like Meigu County in the Daliang Mountains, where rugged terrain, isolation, and poverty can make a surgical appointment feel less like a plan than an impossibility. Closing that gap is what the Sailing Smile Project exists to do.

Janani, the Goodera nonprofit partner lead who works closely with the foundation, has seen what that looks like up close. Children from vulnerable communities arrive for operations their families could never have afforded on their own. For some, the free treatment is the difference between surgery being a distant hope and something they can finally receive. There is something profound, she says, in watching a child reach a hospital knowing that this time, the care they need is actually within reach.

But getting to the operating room is only part of the journey. Even after a date is set, the fear doesn't simply lift. And after surgery, the child is still a child recovering in an unfamiliar place, looking to the adults around them for reassurance.

Janani has noticed that some of the brightest moments happen in the spaces around the medical care itself. A child receives a gift. A package arrives. Someone takes the time to talk to them, or simply make them feel noticed. A small message like "hang in there, you are strong" can carry surprising weight for a child who has spent days waiting. And that reassurance is never only for the child. Behind every young patient is a family carrying its own anxiety, having often come a great distance and rearranged their lives to be with their child.

Goodera entered into this existing network of care. On May 12, 2026, we partnered with the Operation Smile China, creating another way for corporate contributions to reach children the foundation was already supporting.

The mechanics are deliberately simple. When a donation becomes available, Operation Smile identifies the hospitals, treatment centers, and project sites where children are being cared for. Goodera coordinates the logistics and sends the items straight to those locations. The foundation doesn't have to route everything back to Beijing to store, sort, and redistribute. Instead, the hospital where a child is already being treated becomes the destination. It's a small distinction, but it matters across a geography this vast.

One of the clearest examples came through one of Goodera’s corporate partners: a donation of 137 backpacks for children in Operation Smile's programs. Twenty-nine went to Meigu County, where they were handed to children and families during a surgical program there. The remaining 108 arrived in Beijing and were sent on to program locations in Yinchuan, Tibet, and Yunnan, with a small reserve held back for children in upcoming surgical and care programs.

The backpacks were practical, meant for school and everyday use. But inside a hospital, they meant something more. "The backpacks have brought great joy to both children and their families," Lydia Hua from Operation Smile China said. "Beyond providing practical support, this donation has helped children feel encouraged and cared for as they continue their treatment and recovery journeys."

For a child far from home, surrounded by unfamiliar faces, there's a particular comfort in being given something that is simply theirs: a small moment of ordinary childhood in a place that is anything but ordinary. A backpack isn't a medical intervention. It doesn't change what brought the family there. But it tells a child that someone saw them.

The journey of each backpack also shows how philanthropy can work when organizations do what they're each best placed to do. Amazon provides the donation. Goodera coordinates the volunteering and logistics to move it across regions. Operation Smile knows its communities and points to the hospitals where support is needed. The local medical teams are already there, caring for the children. Each carries one part of the journey.

And at the end of it is a child in a hospital corridor, far from home, who feels a little less alone.
